A desperate search is underway in the rugged Romanian mountains for 18-year-old British hiker George Smyth, missing for over a week. But here's where it gets even more heart-wrenching: despite daily searches by a dedicated team, treacherous conditions have forced rescuers to temporarily halt their efforts.
George, a University of Bristol student from Shropshire, vanished on November 23rd while hiking solo in the Bucegi Mountains. His journey began in Poiana Brașov, heading toward Bran, famously known as the site of Count Dracula's castle. He reached Tiganesti, where he made a distress call via the 112 emergency number, revealing he was disoriented, exhausted, and showing signs of hypothermia.
And this is the part most people miss: rescuers advised him to retrace his steps and keep moving to stay awake, but for reasons still unclear, George continued forward, despite the approaching darkness and severe weather.
His mother, Jo Smyth, shared her anguish with Antena1 TV in Romania, pleading for her son's safe return. She described George as a "bright, loving, and adventurous young man" who embarked on this trip without informing his family, wanting to spare them worry. His phone last pinged from a remote, inaccessible mountain area, adding to the urgency of the search.
Sebastian Marinescu, from the local mountain rescue service, told the BBC that over 50 rescuers, a canine unit, drones, and helicopters have been deployed. However, only George's backpack has been found. The search was suspended after seven days due to the risk of avalanches, with Marinescu emphasizing, "We cannot fight against nature."

George’s family has traveled to Romania to support the search efforts, and his rugby club in Newport, Shropshire, has rallied around him, calling him a "much-loved member" and expressing deep concern. As the search remains on hold until weather conditions improve, the rescue team remains committed to bringing George home. His family, friends, and community are holding onto hope, urging anyone with information to come forward.
