The Trump administration has decided to place an indefinite hold on the processing of immigrant visas for individuals from 75 different countries, further tightening the avenues available for legal entry into the United States.
On Wednesday, the State Department announced that this move aims to put a stop to what they describe as the misuse of the immigration system by those who might seek to capitalize on American resources through welfare and public assistance programs.
Since taking office again, President Donald Trump has been focused on limiting both illegal and lawful immigration into the United States. Notably, his administration previously halted immigrant visa processing for individuals hailing from Brazil, Iran, Russia, and Somalia.
This latest order is set to take effect on January 21, but the complete list identifying the 75 affected countries has not yet been disclosed.
Tommy Pigott, the Principal Deputy spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, stated, "The State Department will leverage its established authority to deny eligibility to potential immigrants who might become a public charge in the United States and exploit the generosity of the American populace." This reassessment of procedures is intended to ensure that foreign nationals who would rely on welfare and public benefits are prevented from entering the country, Pigott elaborated.
According to reports from the Associated Press, consular officials have received instructions to pause the processing of immigrant visa applications from the specified countries. However, it is important to note that this suspension does not extend to non-immigrant visas, which include temporary tourist or business visas.
In recent months, the State Department has intensified restrictions on migration from nations that Trump has classified as posing a national security risk. These include countries like Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, and several nations in Africa.
Following an incident in November where an immigrant from Afghanistan was charged with shooting two members of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., the administration took steps to ban or limit the entry of nationals from 19 specific countries. In December, this travel ban expanded to include nationals from five additional countries, along with individuals traveling on documents issued by the Palestinian Authority.
Furthermore, the processing of asylum claims, citizenship applications, and green card requests for immigrants originating from the initial 19 countries affected by the ban has also been suspended.
