In a bold move that has sparked excitement among food enthusiasts, Terra has rekindled its passion for live-fire cooking at a new location on Marcus Clarke Street. This transition comes after the abrupt closure of their popular venue in the No Name Lane area in May 2025, which left many loyal patrons stunned. For seven years, Terra had captivated diners with its signature smoky flavors, and when the news broke about their sudden shutdown, customers had only a few days to savor their beloved dishes before the doors closed for good.
Initially, the team behind Terra announced on social media that this was their final service, leaving many to wonder what led to the closure and whether they would ever reopen. However, just as the dust began to settle from this surprising turn of events, it was revealed that Terra had secured a new home. By June 3, they had completed an impressive renovation of the former Miss Van’s restaurant, a Vietnamese eatery that had closed unexpectedly just months earlier.
While one might assume that a sudden closure followed by a hasty reopening could negatively impact business, the opposite has proven true. The change has reignited national interest in Terra; Time Out featured them in an article highlighting the Best 8 Steaks in Canberra, and the Good Food Guide also acknowledged their culinary prowess—both accolades certainly noted by the owners, Sungyeol Son and Anthony Iannelli.
Now, six months into their new chapter, Terra appears to have settled in nicely. The team reports that the layout of the new venue enhances the dining experience, thanks to its elongated, narrow dining area. Upon entering the restaurant, I felt a twinge of regret for not having returned sooner. After enjoying al fresco dining on a warm summer evening, it became clear that Terra has found its footing in this new setting.
Regrettably, due to spatial limitations in the kitchen, the original smoker could not be relocated, resulting in the removal of beef brisket from the menu—a decision that stirred discontent among dedicated fans. Some diners took to social media to express that the absence of brisket was a serious drawback. Nevertheless, the current offerings, which include delectable charcoal-grilled options such as Calula Creek lamb shoulder from Cowra served with toum and salsa verde, wood-fired glazed chashu pork belly, and whole rotisserie chicken, are truly outstanding. I challenge anyone to try the lamb without thinking about the now-missed brisket!
Among their must-try dishes, the sweet-and-sour pork jowl stands out—a delightful explosion of flavors with its sticky texture. I cannot recommend the ‘Feed Me’ menu enough; priced at $94 per person, it presents an efficient way to indulge in a variety of grilled meats. The platter features generous portions of everything mentioned, paced perfectly for a relaxing dining experience without stretching into a lengthy affair.
While the focus is on the meats, the meal begins and ends with remarkable dishes, including the aforementioned pork jowl and a Basque cheesecake, which combines rich, smoky cheesecake with a refreshing strawberry coulis.
The Terra team consistently delivers top-notch service, and this occasion was no exception. The front-of-house staff manages to strike a balance between a laid-back atmosphere and attentive service that surpasses QR code ordering systems. Each interaction with our server felt like catching up with an old friend eager to offer more drinks and delicious meats—who wouldn’t appreciate that?
Although some favorites from their extensive wine collection couldn’t fit into the new space and were transferred to Terra’s sister venue, Outro, located in Braddon, the remaining selection does not disappoint. Iconic choices, such as the Ochota Barrels from Adelaide Hills, continue to grace the wine list.
If you're more inclined to visit during lunch hours, Terra offers a convenient counter-service option called the ‘Terra Bench.’ This innovative approach allows diners to pick their proteins and sides, making it an ideal choice for those working in the city who need a quick yet satisfying meal.
While I could easily suggest that it feels as though Terra never left, the truth is they did. This serves as a crucial reminder not to take our favorite dining spots for granted, as they can vanish overnight without warning, leaving us longing for their return.
You can find Terra at Unit 4/115 Marcus Clarke Street, open for lunch from Monday to Friday and for dinner every day of the week.
