Despite the return of over a million refugees and nearly two million internally displaced people to Syria this year, the country's humanitarian crisis remains a dire and complex issue, according to the United Nations. The UNHCR highlights that the humanitarian needs are vast and urgent, with over 16 million people in Syria requiring immediate aid. The return of displaced individuals has not been accompanied by improvements in essential services or infrastructure, leading to severe shortages in housing, water, and healthcare facilities. Many homes are uninhabitable, and schools and health centers are operating beyond capacity or with minimal resources. The situation is particularly dire for children, who make up half of the Syrian refugee population, as they face widespread deprivation of regular education, putting an entire generation at risk of losing protection and learning opportunities. The UNHCR also warns of the fragile security situation, with ongoing threats from landmines and economic crises in host countries like Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey, exacerbating the challenges faced by refugees.
