Snapchat has unveiled a groundbreaking feature called Topic Chats, designed to revolutionize public discussions and trending topics. This innovative tool aims to bring the platform's popular chat features into the open, fostering engaging conversations about global events and community matters.
In a recent blog post, Snapchat explained the concept: "Topic Chats are straightforward. They integrate our most-loved chat tools into public conversations about the world's latest developments and your local community. Additionally, they organize Snaps related to a specific topic, making it effortless to explore and visualize the ongoing discussions."
Here's how it works: Users will have the option to join public discussions about global events and community matters. The feature will group Snaps related to a particular subject, making it easier for users to visually explore the topic and engage with others. A yellow 'Join the Chat' button will appear on Stories or Spotlight videos, offering instant access to ongoing conversations.
Over the next few weeks, users in Canada, New Zealand, and the US will start seeing Topic Chats across Snapchat, including in Chat shortcuts, search, the Stories page, and on Spotlight videos. Snapchat assures users that profiles remain private to non-friends, preventing unwanted friending or direct messages. The company will also moderate Topic Chats to ensure conversations remain safe and appropriate for the community.
"Topic chats are simple. They bring our most popular chat features to public conversations about what’s happening in the world and in your community, and they cluster Snaps about that topic to make it easy to explore what’s happening visually. You'll be able to see if your friends are in the Topic Chats so you can discover common interests, and we'll bring chats you join to the top of your Topic Chat page," the company added.
