A heated uproar erupted in the Senate on Wednesday as several lawmakers resisted a motion to excuse Christopher Musa, the former chief of defense staff and a ministerial nominee, from being questioned.
The clash began when Sani Musa, the senator for Niger East, suggested that Musa be allowed to “take a bow and go.” The proposal was quickly shot down, with many colleagues rising to their feet and shouting in protest as the chamber grew tense.
Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi South, appeared visibly furious and marched toward the Senate President, insisting that Musa must face questions.
“DONALD TRUMP IS ON OUR NECK”
Senate President Godswill Akpabio intervened to restore order, reminding lawmakers that the screening process was a serious one that should involve direct public interrogation. He stressed that Nigerians expect to hear from the nominee, especially given the country’s security challenges.
“Our constituents want to hear from him. We are asking him questions because our constituents would like to ask him questions too,” Akpabio said.
“This is not a moment to say bow and go. Even Donald Trump is on our neck. With thousands of Nigerian children affected by ongoing insecurity, give the man a chance to offer Nigerians reassurance. It’s not a rejection of him.”
After the chamber regained order, the Senate proceeded with a full confirmation interview of the retired military officer.
