Keys shared her experience, saying, "It's a two-way street. Players sometimes look for new coaches before officially parting ways with their current ones. And I've had coaches approach me, asking if I'm looking for someone, while they're still actively working with another player!"
She continued, "It's a delicate situation. Sometimes, a player's team senses an impending change, maybe due to subtle hints about not continuing after certain tournaments. That's when agents step in, quietly exploring options to ensure the player isn't left without a coach. Unfortunately, there are coaches who engage in poaching, which leaves a bad taste.
"The worst part? Many players have no clue it's happening behind their backs. It's a tricky situation, and it raises questions about the ethics of coaching in tennis."
During the podcast, Keys emphasized her preference for a small, trusted circle of support. She also shared an amusing story about how her husband, former ATP player Bjorn Fratangelo, became her full-time coach after his retirement from the Tour in 2023. Keys revealed that her husband was initially nervous about the idea but eventually agreed, and they've been working together ever since.
