That’s right, motorists were able to use the M27 between Junctions 9 and 11 from 4 AM on Saturday, January 3rd, earlier than the originally planned reopening on Sunday, January 4th. This welcome news came after Hampshire County Council, in collaboration with VolkerFitzpatrick and National Highways, successfully completed major engineering work to install a new underpass at Junction 10. This involved sliding a colossal, 8,500-tonne, 60-meter long concrete structure a full 65 meters into place. Think of it like fitting a giant puzzle piece under a busy motorway! The underpass is part of a much larger, £100 million-plus improvement scheme for Junction 10, fully funded by the Buckland Group and Homes England. This investment is designed to support the development of the Welborne Garden Village, a new community planned to eventually include up to 6,000 homes, schools, and various community facilities. Under current planning regulations, only 1,160 homes can be occupied before the upgraded junction is fully complete and operational. The new underpass itself is expected to open to traffic later in 2026, offering two lanes in each direction (northbound and southbound). It will also feature new entry and exit slip roads, as well as a shared footway and cycle route connecting Fareham Common to Welborne. The entire Junction 10 improvement scheme is scheduled to be completed by winter 2026.
