Hydrogen's hidden role in climate change: a double-edged sword?

From 1990 to 2020, hydrogen emissions increased, causing a 0.02°C rise in global temperatures, which is a fraction of the overall 1.5°C increase since the pre-industrial era.

When more hydrogen is present, it reduces the effectiveness of natural detergents that break down methane, allowing it to stick around and warm the planet for longer. The production of hydrogen from natural gas and coal, which is currently the dominant method, releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide. The ideal scenario is to produce 'green' hydrogen using renewable energy, but this method is costly and faces numerous challenges.
