But here's where it gets even more alarming: this seemingly natural blend contains hidden pharmaceuticals—powerful steroids and an anti-inflammatory drug—that have already caused severe health issues, including acute kidney injuries and Cushing’s syndrome, a condition that can leave you with a 'moon face' appearance.
In a November 19 statement, HSA revealed that lab tests uncovered two potent steroids, dexamethasone and prednisolone, along with diclofenac, a painkiller known for its anti-inflammatory properties. These ingredients are far from harmless. The steroids, typically prescribed for inflammatory conditions, can spike blood sugar levels, paving the way for diabetes, high blood pressure, cataracts, osteoporosis, and an increased risk of infections. Meanwhile, diclofenac, when used long-term, can trigger gastric bleeding, heart attacks, strokes, and further kidney damage in those already vulnerable.
What’s particularly deceptive is the product’s marketing. HW Beauty claims to be a ‘steroid-free, premium-quality’ supplement, passed down through generations to treat ailments like joint pain and gout. This misleading label could easily convince consumers of its safety—a dangerous assumption, as these ingredients should only be used under strict medical supervision.
Two individuals were hospitalized in November after consuming the product, though they’ve since been discharged. HSA is currently reviewing their cases. Meanwhile, the authority has taken swift action, collaborating with e-commerce giants like Shopee, Carousell, and Lazada to remove the product from their platforms. They’ve also warned sellers and suppliers to halt sales immediately, threatening severe penalties—up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine—for those who continue to distribute it.
